During this year’s summer holidays, 800 students from across Jamaica will participate in the ‘Spruce Up Jamaica’ internship, which is administered by the Tourism Product Development Company (TPDCo) and funded by the Tourism Enhancement Fund (TEF).

Students from tertiary institutions and high schools will be employed by tourism related entities and businesses in the parishes of St Mary, St Ann, St James, Hanover, Kingston, St Catherine, Manchester, St Elizabeth and Westmoreland.

The launch of this year’s internship will take place Thursday at the Jamaica Tourism Centre in Montego Bay, St James.

According to a release from the tourism ministry, the programme’s aim is to encourage young people to pursue a career in the tourism industry.

In order to be eligible for the internship, which is slated to last for six weeks, participants are required to take part in a one day orientation, as well as training in tourism, security awareness, the marketing of brand Jamaica, cultural sensitivity, customer service and the role of tourism organisations.

The first 400 participants were placed yesterday for three weeks, and the second batch of participants is due to start their attachment on August 2.

“(The tourism industry) will always remain very attractive to young people, because it allows them to make their mark in the industry that is the life blood of our economy,” said Kingsley Roberts, director of corporate communications at the Ministry of Tourism.

The students will have opportunities to get hands on experience while working in various positions within the hotel industry and the private sector.

“We have seen a tremendous improvement in the attitude and aptitude of the workforce, especially in the tourism sector, since the Summer Internship Programme started in 2008.

“The youngsters have obviously learnt a lot during their three week assignment, which is an indication that the programme is achieving its main objective,” said Edmund Bartlett, Minister of Tourism, in a release.

Roberts confirmed this, telling The Gleaner:

“Many people, who have participated in the programme, have subsequently gained permanent employment.”
