    I can just imagine the stresses the amalgam puts a tooth under with extreme changes in temperature. I mean, when you consider that mercury has one of the highest thermal expansion coefficients among elements out there, you can visualize the yo-yo effect the expansion and contractions caused by temperature change when someone eats hot or cold food. The temperature changes and resulting change in volume of the amalgam in the tooth I can see creates havoc with building up stresses in the tooth. This I am sure should be another reason for considering the composite.
