Senator Newby calls for renewal of social contract

PARLIAMENTARY Secretary in the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture, Senator Warren Newby has called for the renewal of a social contract in Jamaica.
“The social contract defines the relationship between individuals and the State, their expectations of the State and the contributions that they are willing to make to foster social cohesion and human advancement,” Newby told the State of the Nation Debate in the Senate at Gordon House last Friday.
He said a social contract is needed to build a culture of tax compliance; to foster a culture of enterprise; to foster a culture of wellness to reduce the health bill; and to fulfil the objective of a stable population by 2030.
“We need to foster a culture of a rules-based society that accepts the rule of law and is bound by it. We need to foster a meritocratic society, and include all of these values in our recommitment to country after 50 years of independence,” the parliamentary secretary told the House.
Senator Newby pointed out that the Government is committed to fiscal discipline that will not see reckless expenditure, devaluation and inflation eating away at the “worth of the sacrifices that have been made by our people.
“We commit to exercise prudence and to reject political expediency. To the policeman, nurse, teacher, civil servant, farmer, domestic worker and our business people, we commit to judicious governance,” he said.
