Police Commissioner, Owen Ellington, has linked the ongoing reduction in violent crimes, specifically murder and shootings, to better intelligence.
In his address at the opening of the Jamaica Labour Party's (JLP) West Portland Constituency office on Sunday, Prime Minister Bruce Golding revealed that between January 1 and June 19, there were 368 fewer reported murders, compared with the corresponding period last year.
Commissioner Ellington did not have the official statistics at hand when he spoke with RJR News but he revealed that reported cases of murder had seen a forty per cent reduction compared with the corresponding period last year.
He says shootings also reflected a double digit reduction in the region of 36 per cent.
The JCF Head noted that there are several factors, chief among them better intelligence, which have played a major role in the reduction of serious crimes.
“Obviously one of them is the result of putting more people on the front line, in the streets , in the hotspots and pursuing the criminals, particularly the criminal gangs. But there are other things that are working as well . We are working with better intelligence, we have been doing much better at investigations we are solving more of the crimes, more of the murders – in fact our clear up rate last year improved by ten percent above the previous year…..”said Commissioner Ellington.
