A police officer in Zimbabwe learned the hard way that you don't use President Mugabe's bathroom.
Pity the poor soul who dares challenge Zimbabwean dictator Robert Mugabe's throne – or even sit on it.
A police officer in the southern African nation has spent a month in detainment for using the presidential bathroom during a trade fair in the city of Bulawayo, CNN reported.
Alois Mabhunu, a homicide detective who was working security at the fair last May, forced his way into the VIP lavatory – which was reserved exclusively for Mugabe and African Export Import Bank head Jean Louis Ekra – despite resistance from officers in charge of guarding the toilet.
This brash move got Mabhunu relief, but it was only temporary. The cop was arrested the next day, and has been in custody ever since. Last week he was sentenced to 10 days in prison and received a demotion.
According to CNN, an appeal by Mabhunu will be heard later this week by Augustine Chihuri, commissioner general of the Zimbabwe Republican Police force.
While local authorities have refused to comment on the matter, critics of Mugabe are condemning what they consider another flagrant abuse by the notoriously brutal regime.
"There has to be a law saying the toilet is the president's, but this was a public one," Zimbabwean human-rights lawyer Beatrice Mtetwa told Souuth Africa's Mail & Guardian. "They will have had to issue a proclamation in the Government Gazette specifying it. I bet they didn't do that."
Mugabe is considered one of the world's worst human rights abusers, and has been accused of murdering thousands of his citizens and crushing all opposition during his more than three decades in power.
