For some four decades, Jamaican politicians and others have manipulated poor, disenchanted young and not-so-young Jamaican men into carrying out (sometimes) unspeakable horrific acts of violence against their fellow Jamaicans. In fact, the violence scenario had reached the stage by the middle of the first decade of this century that the paradise known as Jamaica had become, on a per capita basis, one of the most murderous nations on the planet.
With today’s well organized transatlantic drugs and gun trade, high unemployment, disenchantment with the political and socio-economic milieu, and with the presence in Jamaica of someone like the fiery, very articulate cleric Abdullah al-Faisal, surely it cannot be too great a stretch to visualize the possibility that a poor nation-state such as ours can become a breeding ground for terrorism? Personally speaking, I think it is unlikely, but it certainly is not impossible!
Nationalism is good, and to be encouraged, but when it causes sensible people to overlook conspicuous possibilities, then….
