The Gleaner understands that there has been a major accident in Ewarton , St Catherine, where four persons have been killed.

The four are all employees of the National Solid Waste Management.

Several people have been injured.

The police are reporting that 13 people remain hospitalised this afternoon following a major traffic crash in Ewarton, St. Catherine in which four men were killed.

The crash happened around 5:15 am.

The four killed are all employees of the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA).

The police say three of them died on the spot while the fourth died in hospital.

The dead men have been identified as Everett Campbell, Michael Mitchell, Ricardo Salmon and Alvin Mitchell who was driving an NSMWA truck.

The police say the truck being driven by Mitchell with the other men aboard was heading towards Mount Rosser.

It’s understood that on reaching a section of the roadway the pickup crashed into a trailer that was travelling in the opposition direction.

It’s not clear what caused the crash.

Ewarton resident Devon Green who was early on the scene told our news centre that residents were awakened by a loud bang.

The crash victims were taken to the Linstead Hospital with some being transferred to the Spanish Town Hospital for further treatment.

The Executive Director of the NSWMA, Joan Gordon Webley, says the agency is deeply saddened by the crash.

And she says the agency will be supporting the family of those killed.

Around 128 people have been killed on the roads since the start of the year.

This is eight more than the figure for the similar period last year.
