  • Portia stands by unemployment claims

The Opposition Leader Portia Simpson Miller is maintaining that more than 100,000 people have lost their jobs in the past three years.

Simpson Miller first made the claim in her contribution to the Budget debates last week.

However, yesterday the Prime Minister Bruce Golding challenged the figure saying only about 58,000 workers have been sent home.

In a release last night, the Opposition Leader said it is the Prime Minister who has not been truthful.

She said the Prime Minister should check his own figures with those of the Planning Institute of Jamaica.

Simpson Miller is also demanding that the appropriate state authorities publish the official Unemployment and Poverty figures, year by year for the past four years.

This is where the media is dropping the ball. Its almost 24 hours since the PM made his speech and none of them has come forward with a fact check as yet.
"Jamaica's future reflects its past, having attained only one per cent annual growth over 30 years whilst neighbours have grown at five per cent." (Article)
