  • Bruce Golding to rehabilitate image

Prime Minister of Jamaica Bruce Golding is to embark on an initiative to reconnect with Jamaicans as he seeks to regain public confidence in light the fallout from the Manatt/ Dudus saga.

Golding has faced severe backlash after admitting that he, as Leader of the Jamaica Labour Party, sanctioned the hiring of US law firm Manatt, Phelps and Phillips, to lobby the Obama Administration on the extradition request for Christopher 'Dudus' Coke.

He made the admission after first denying in Parliament that he had knowledge of the hiring of the firm.

The Opposition, private sector, civic groups and ordinary Jamaicans were angered by Golding’s lack of full disclosure and called for his resignation.

Speaking at a post-Cabinet Press briefing this morning, Daryl Vaz, the Minister with responsibility for Information, said the Manatt / Dudus saga had negatively affected Jamaicans’ perception of the Prime Minister.

And, Vaz said the prime minister would be moving to rebuild his relationship with Jamaicans.

Maybe a couple years in an Adult Rehabilitation Centre would work wonders for him.

So what did Dudus have on BG? Forgive me for asking a naive question but why would he want to protect a known criminal.

I don't think that he could do anything to mitigate the fact that he deliberately misled the people. How does anyone gloss over such a blatant lie?

If there are policies that he/theJLP has undertaken that are benefiting the nation then maybe whoever relieves him of leadership will continue them after he is voted out... how can you trust him in future?

Unfortunately for Bruce it would seem that the majority of Jamaican society did get the Letterhed. Tough road to hoe. The PNP did not deserve this gift.

                  JLP plans Manatt recovery operation
Acknowledges dip in public opinion ahead of election year

THE Government says that it is taking heed of the results of the recent RJR/Boxill poll, which showed worsened trust in the ruling Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) following the recently concluded Dudus/Manatt Commission of Enquiry.
The findings of the poll, which was conducted between April 9 and 15, showed that Prime Minister Bruce Golding, justice minister Dorothy Lightbourne and security minister Dwight Nelson were among those viewed unfavourably by members of the public.
Information minister Daryl Vaz during his appearance at the Dudus/Manatt Commission of Enquiry, held at the Jamaica Conference Centre in downtown Kingston.
                  1/1
“There is no denying that the Manatt affair has had a negative impact on the perception of the prime minister and by extension the party and the government,” information minister Daryl Vaz told journalists at yesterday’s weekly post-Cabinet press briefing which was held at Jamaica House in Kingston.
Vaz acknowledged that Golding and his ministers would have to hit the road and regain public trust ahead of the general election, which is constitutionally due next year.
“He will have to spend more time after the Manatt report and the budget going back out there and reconnecting with the people because we have been under severe pressure under the last 12 months from recession to everything you can think of,” he said.
He maintained that Golding did the right thing in establishing the enquiry in keeping with public demand. The report of the three-member commission is expected to be ready by May 16.

That is a very pertinent question.. no forgiveness required.

There is no evidence that he misled the people and there is no evidence that he tried to protect a known criminal.. beyond what is directed by the constitution or the law. Unless one is also of the opinion that the Deputy Solicitor General was also trying to 'protect' Dudus outside of what protection is to afforded any citizen of the country.

There is no upside to that.. Golding does not need Dudus to run his constituency or win an election in Tivoli or nationally so.. what exactly is going to happen now that he has failed to 'protect' him ??

There is way more upside to NOT having a Dudus around so if anything Golding should have been trying to ensure the validity of the process and mek sure there would be no mis-fire...

That is another example of poor reporting.. it is so poor one would normally think it intentional however the generally poor standards of language use in the local press leaves room for doubt...

When did Golding deny knowledge of the hiring of the Firm ?

                        Please refresh my memory.

If Bruce Golding needed Dudus permission to go to Tivoli Gardens then he would have been elated to get the Extradition request..
