  • Passenger railway service to face first major test

The Government's much heralded plan for the resumption of passenger railway service is to face its first major test on Saturday.

The Ministry of Transport says all is in place for Saturday's official test run and relaunch scheduled to get underway at 8 am
It comes 18 years after the Jamaica Railway Corporation, JRC, curtailed its operations.

The test run will begin in May Pen, Clarendon and end in Spanish Town, St Catherine.

Prime Minister Bruce Golding and Transport Minister Mike Henry will lead a delegation on the excursion which will include stops along the route and cultural presentations
The Transport Ministry is making arrangements for the resumption of service on a phased basis within another month.

There will be six coaches that can carry a total of 480 passengers from Spanish Town to Linstead.

Meanwhile, Mr. Bonitto says the fare structure for passenger rail service is still being worked out.

He explained that the fare is not expected to be higher than what is being charged elsewhere in the public transport sector.
"Jamaica's future reflects its past, having attained only one per cent annual growth over 30 years whilst neighbours have grown at five per cent." (Article)
