"Now that the stabilisation of the economy is firmly in place, our focus must turn to growth and development," he said.
He went further to note that despite the challenges presented by the global recession, the Administration has been successful in its effort to "stabilise the economy" and meet the "targets set under the Standby Agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF)".
"We are seeing some of the benefits of this effort. Interest rates have declined to the lowest level in almost 40 years. We have returned to single-digit inflation. There is sustained stability in the foreign exchange market with the Net International Reserves at a record level of US$2.6 billion," the governor general said.
Pointing to the "significant reduction in crime" over the last few months, with murders declining by more than 40 per cent since the start of this year, when compared last year, the governor general said the members of the security forces were to be lauded.
"We commend the ordinary citizens who are playing their part in co-operating with the security forces to rid their communities of crime," he said but added that "much remains to be done".
