One week after welcoming the world's largest ship, the historic Falmouth Port docked two major megaliners concurrently yesterday, carrying some 10,000 passengers.
Royal Caribbean Cruises' luxurious Allure of the Seas (the sister ship to the world's largest cruise liner, Oasis of the Seas) and Pullmantur's Horizon Valletta made their maiden calls to the high-tech Trelawny.
Heralding the occasion, Andrea C. Whyte, assistant vice-president - public relations at the Port Authority of Jamaica (PAJ), said: "This truly indicates that both berths are in a state of readiness and are capable of handling mega as well as medium-size vessels concurrently and the Port Authority of Jamaica along with our main partner, Royal Caribbean Cruises Limited, are pleased to deliver a world-class facility to cruise passengers."
On-board the ships were several members of the Jamaican diaspora, Falmouthians and the United Kingdom's famous comedian and presenter of travel logs, Paul Merton. They were able to experience the town's rich cultural heritage, as well as to visit other attractions in Ocho Rios and Montego Bay, said Whyte.
Intensified efforts
According to the PAJ assistant vice-president, the cruise Jamaica brand is intensifying its ongoing efforts to attract vessels of varied sizes to the country's newly constructed port facility.
Last Tuesday, at the official opening of the port, Royal Caribbean Cruise Line promised to bring some eight million cruise-ship passengers over the next 10 years.
Going forward to at least 2013, an Oasis class vessel will dock at the Falmouth Pier, senior vice-president of shipping, William Tatham, told The Gleaner then.
He said that Royal Caribbean would also be bringing in a lot of additional tonnage - its Spanish cruise brand, 'The Horizon'.
The joint PAJ/RCCL US$270-million cruise ship project is crucial to the island's bid to enhance the visitor experience.
