  • PNP ready to return to power

Leader of the Opposition People's National Party (PNP), Portia Simpson-Miller says the environment is now ripe for the party to return to power.

Addressing the National Executive Council, NEC meeting on Sunday, the party leader pointed to the desperate economic situation facing many Jamaicans.
She argued that 120 thousand Jamaicans have lost their jobs under the current government and also pointed to the fact that the country's debt has moved from J$950 billion dollars in 2007 to J$.6 trillion today.
The poverty index she added has moved from 9.8 percent in 2007 to 20 percent.

Mrs Simpson-Miller said Jamaica is in a desperate state, adding that the Bruce Golding government has lost the trust of the people.
However, she called on NEC members to hit the streets to demonstrate and convince the Jamaican public that the PNP is the better choice.
Meanwhile, the party says its on the verge of settling the slate of candidates to contest the general election and local government election.
Party General Secretary, Peter Bunting says the party has so far selected 57 of the 60 candidates and is on the verge of selecting candidates for the remaining three seats.
Mr Bunting added that the PNP has so far selected 220 of the 227 candidates for the local government election and that the party will contest every seat when the elections are called
