Cruise ship passengers shocked to see waste offloaded in Nassau

CRUISE ship passengers were horrified to see piles of waste being offloaded from a Carnival cruise ship as they were leaving the Port of Nassau last week.
The Nassau residents, well aware of the limited landfill space in New Providence, said they were shocked to see bulky waste, including furniture, displays, carpeting, and broken pieces of wood and metal being taken off the cruise ship with a forklift and dumped into bins at the port.
Kimberly Pyfrom of Paradise Island was boarding the Oasis of the Seas ship with her family when she saw the trash being offloaded from the Carnival cruise ship at the port.
She said: "I was shocked. They had to use a forklift to get some of the carpeting and cabinets off the boat, and this was all going on where passengers and tourists are getting on and off the ships.
"Why are we taking all this trash here?"
Port controller for the Nassau Port Authority Lieutenant Commander Patrick McNeil said the port is obliged to provide waste receptacles for cruise ships and does not have the power to limit the amount of waste the ships dump.
Many of the ships off-load waste in Nassau as it is the last stop before returning to Florida at the end of a cruise around the Caribbean, Lt McNeil said.
"We have disposal dumps for all our cruise ships to place their discarded garbage," he said.
                "It's part of the protocol.
"There's only so much capacity ships have to store waste onboard so it is one of the requirements for disposals to be available when they stop at the port of call.
"They are at liberty to put anything onboard that they no longer need in the bins, providing it's not chemical waste.
"We prefer for garbage to be placed in bins than for them to dump it at sea." Lt McNeil said the possibility of imposing limits on the amount of waste dumped by cruise ships in Nassau has not been discussed. As it stands, the port is actually required to increase the number of trash receptacles provided if cruise ships so request.
