Chairman of the Manatt-Dudus commission of enquiry Emil George has asked [COLOR=blue !important][COLOR=blue !important]the [COLOR=blue !important]police[/COLOR][/COLOR][/COLOR] to conduct an investigation to determine what prompted police personnel to visit the office of the Solicitor General, Douglas Leys, in a reported attempt to seize his computers.
While the Police High Command has confirmed that no raid was carried out it said the police had gone to Leys’ office after receiving instruction from an [COLOR=blue !important][COLOR=blue !important]attorney[/COLOR][/COLOR] participating in the enquiry regarding a purported fraudulent e-mail.
George asked the police to conduct a thorough investigation following a request from Ley’s [COLOR=blue !important][COLOR=blue !important]lawyer[/COLOR][/COLOR] Oliver Smith.
Frank Phipps, the attorney representing the Jamaica Labour Party, also sought to clarify his involvement in the events which led the police to Ley’s office.
He said he was shown a text message asking that he cooperate with a police sergeant.
He said he met with the policemen and gave them a copy of the document.
However, Phipps said he did so after speaking with the Attorney General Dorothy Lightbourne who said it was not a problem for the police to go to the Solicitor General’s Department.
The JLP attorney also pointed out that Smith had offered his client’s computer to be examined.
However, Smith said the offer was made to the Commission and was not an open invitation to the police to barge into his client’s office.
