JLP to indicate how it will address furore over Warmington's behaviour
The governing Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) will be moving to do damage control and prevent a fallout amidst a growing lobby against its candidate for the upcoming by election in South West St. Catherine.
The party will be issuing a statement Tuesday morning which will outline steps to be taken in an attempt to douse calls for Everald Warmington not to be nominated as the JLP’s candidate in the April 4 by-election in South West St. Catherine.
Mr. Warmington stepped down as Member of Parliament (MP) for the constituency after he announced that he was an American citizen at the time of his nomination for the September 2007 general election.
A JLP insider told RJR News that, among other things, Mr. Warmington will be asked to issue a statement.
However, it could not be ascertained whether the former MP will present an apology.
RJR News has been informed that the JLP will also be investigating claims about Mr. Warmington's behaviour towards media practioners.
The matter was discussed at Monday night's weekly meeting of the party's Standing Committee.
It followed the Jamaica Chamber of Commerce's endorsement of the call by journalists for Mr. Warmington to be withdrawn as a candidate for the by-election.
The call was made, on the weekend, by a group of women from a wide cross-section of media organizations, in response to the offensive manner in which Mr. Warmington responded to CVM News anchor, Kerlyn Brown, and subsequent degrading comments made.
The call is being supported by the Media Association of Jamaica and the Press Association of Jamaica.
Members of the JLP met with representatives of the media on Tuesday to discuss the matter.
Warmington must undergo behavioural change – Scott
And Political Analyst Shalman Scott says the furore surrounding Mr. Warmington's behaviour can be quelled if the former MP issues a sincere public apology.
Mr. Scott says Mr. Warmington would also be required to give a clear commitment that there will not be a repeat of his offensive actions.
"If he genuinely shows remorse, a final chance could be extended to him to be nominated (on Wednesday, March 16), as the candidate for South West St. Catherine for the JLP but he must understand that enough is enough. It’s time for Mr. Warmington, if he intends to continue in the public domain as a public servant, he must effect course correction as far as his attitude and behaviour to people," contends Mr. Scott.
