Gov’t investigating unauthorized financial deals under the PNP administration
Finance Minister Audley Shaw.
Finance Minister Audley Shaw has hinted that investigations are being carried out into several unauthorized financial deals entered into by the former People’s National Party (PNP) administration.
Speaking at a Generation 2000 meeting on Tuesday night, Mr. Shaw made reference to the recent criticism by the Opposition of the sale of the Sandals Whitehouse in Westmoreland to hotel mogul, Gordon "Butch" Stewart.
Mr. Shaw reiterated that the sale was legitimate.
He fired back by stating that there were inappropriate deals involving the former Government.
The Finance Ministry said details will soon be made public.
“The PNP are trying to suggest that this is a sweetheart deal. Not a sweetheart deal at all. There are many sweetheart deals that I am aware of and I mentioned some in the House and there are more that we are studying now that I will be talking about very soon from now. All who waan vex, vex, but since they are talking about sweetheart deals I have quite a few that I am going to be revealing shortly,” Mr. Shaw said.
And the Finance Minister has laid down a challenge to his Opposition counterpart Dr. Omar Davies for a debate on the state of the economy.
Mr. Shaw told the gathering that Dr. Davies had predicted that he would be a failure as Finance Minister and that his economic policies would not work.
However, Mr. Shaw stated that the policies being pursued by the Government have borne fruit, and he is ready to challenge Dr. Davies in a debate.
“I'd love to debate Omar now or prior to the next election and if Mr. [Peter] Phillips comes I would like to debate him,” Mr. Shaw said.
