The appearance of Industry, Investment and Commerce Minister Karl Samuda before the Manatt-Dudus commission of enquiry at the Jamaica Conference Centre this morning was cut short after several attorneys raised objections about the questions asked by Queen's Counsel KD Knight.

Samuda was summoned before the commission to authenticate a media statement, issued last year in his capacity of Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) general secretary, which Knight was questioning former junior minister, Dr. Ronald Robinson about.

A certified copy of the press release was quickly entered into evidence, but Knight, who is representing the People's National Party (PNP), attempted to question Samuda about an investigation he conducted into the Manatt affair.

Attorneys-at-law, Hugh Small, Frank Phipps and Patrick Bailey objected, arguing that Samuda was not before the commission for that purpose.

Knight then suggested that Samuda be asked to provide a witness statement so that he can be cross-examined.

This drew the ire of Phipps, the attorney representing the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP), who chided his colleagues for "playing ducks and drakes with this issue."

"The minister was brought here to authenticate a document. He has done so, let us now get on with the cross examination," he urged.

However, commission chairman Emil George accepted Knight's suggestion and asked Samuda to provide a witness statement as soon as possible.

He is scheduled to re-appear before the commission to be cross-examined by other attorneys.

Knight was then allowed to resume his cross-examination of Dr. Robinson, who punched several holes in the statement Prime Minister Bruce Golding provided the commission.

The former junior foreign affairs and foreign trade minister is now being cross-examined by attorney at law, Patrick Atkinson, who is representing Opposition MP, Dr. Peter Phillips.
