  • Phipps' craven disclosures imperils Lewin's wife

As I predicted but...This was an easy one to predict... good going Old Fart Phipps

Lawyer: Special security for Lewin’s wife
    Paul Henry
    Friday, February 11, 2011

A special security arrangement has had to be put in place for the wife of former police commissioner Hardley Lewin after Queen’s Counsel Frank Phipps revealed her identity and place of employment during the Dudus/Manatt commission of enquiry on Monday.

The development was disclosed during yesterday’s sitting of the enquiry by attorney Linton Gordon while objecting to Phipps’ pressing of the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) chief legal officer, Lieutenant Colonel Patrick Cole, to reveal the name of the person who heads the Military Intelligence Unit of the JDF.
Gordon, who represents Lewin, told the enquiry that, as a result of Phipps’ disclosure there have been “issues” with the criminal One Order gang.
Phipps, who is representing the Jamaica Labour Party at the enquiry, had given the impression on Monday that Lewin’s wife, who works at the US Embassy in Kingston, was the one who revealed to Lewin on August 24, 2009 that a request would be arriving the following day for the extradition of Christopher ‘Dudus’ Coke, the former don of the Tivoli Gardens community, located in Prime Minister Bruce Golding’s West Kingston constituency.

On Tuesday, Phipps, in defence of his action, said that the name of Lewin’s wife was already posted on the US Embassy’s website.

But following the adjournment of yesterday’s sitting of the enquiry, Linton told reporters that the information on the website only revealed Lewin’s wife’s name and not the department of the embassy in which she worked or the fact that she was a member of the JDF.

“Following on the disclosure... certain unusual and unexpected movements have been detected and certain activities pertaining to her movements on the road,” Linton said.
    He called Phipps’ disclosure “unfortunate”.
“It’s most unfortunate and inappropriate and the type of old-time dirty politics that we need to move from in this country,” said Gordon.

Members of the Spanish Town-based One Order gang, police reported last year, were among many others who travelled to Tivoli Gardens to bear arms in an effort to prevent Coke’s arrest in May. The ensuing three-day gun battle resulted in the deaths of 73 civilians and a soldier.

The Hannah Town Police Station was torched by gunmen a day before the police/military team was forced to enter the barricaded Tivoli to restore law and order on May 23. Two police officers were also killed by gunmen a day before the operation took place. The Darling Street Police Station was also torched by gunmen during the unrest, which also shuttered the downtown business district.

Exercise has always been the main focus when one begins to consider good health. Now everyone is familiar with getting up early in the morning to go jogging, walking on treadmill or afternoons at the gym. One woman anxious to offer something different has started another form of exercise for those interested - Splash Aqua-Aerobic Fitness Club.
Former officer of the Jamaican Defence Force, Tessa Lewin served for eight years with the force and attained the rank of captain. With her love for physical fitness and the urge to make exercise much easier Tessa started an aqua-aerobic programme.
              Who knew?
