After the Fourteenth Amendment (1868) granted former slaves the rights of citizenship, male African Americans received the right to vote with ratification of the Fifteenth Amendment in 1870. However, states still prevented African Americans from voting through the loophole "grandfather clause," which stated that one could not vote unless his grandfather had voted, an impossibility among most blacks. Although the Supreme Court struck down the grandfather clause in 1915, states used a variety of other methods-namely, the poll tax, literacy tests, fraud, and intimidation-to keep African Americans away from the polls. The Voting Rights Act of 1965 outlawed discriminatory voting practices that had been responsible for the widespread disenfranchisement of African Americans voters.
