Tufton promises more farmers' markets in two weeks

THE Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries will be spearheading more farmers' markets within the weeks ahead to address the oversupply of local produce, says Minister of Agriculture Christopher Tufton.
Speaking with journalists after the Jamaica Employers Federation's breakfast meeting at the Wyndham Kingston Hotel this morning, Tufton listed "tomatoes, carrot, lettuce, cabbage and one or two others" as the crops that would be targeted for sale at the markets.
A series of six farmers' markets held across the island last Friday were met with mixed reviews, with some buyers complaining about the variety and quantity of produce available.
Tufton apologised for the hiccups at the last markets and said the ministry would try to improve on the last effort.
"We are now in the process of refining the farmers' market concept and we will be having another one within another week and a half", he said
