Poor communication yet again
Monday, January 24, 2011
FOR many of us, the naming of an airport in St Mary in north-eastern Jamaica for the late Ian Fleming seems perfectly logical.
After all, St Mary — surely among the most beautiful and restful places — was where Mr Fleming penned or conceptualised most, if not all, of his famous novels portraying the adventures of a fictional British intelligence officer, James Bond.
Those James Bond books by Mr Fleming have been the basis for one of the longest continually running film series in history, dating back to 1962. In the global film industry, Bond movies are consistently among the most successful.
So then, it makes perfect sense for those charged with the managing and marketing of Jamaica's life-giving tourism product to constantly seek ways to remind the rest of the world of the close links between Fleming/Bond and St Mary, Jamaica.
Note the comment in part from Prime Minister Bruce Golding at the opening of the airport as he sought to justify the strategic decision to name the airport in honour of a Briton, "...the market to which we are appealing is a market to which the name Ian Fleming would have some resonance".
Trouble is, in their haste, the authorities apparently erred badly in basic communication. They failed to properly consult and to listen to the feedback.
We are told by our reporter in yesterday's Sunday Observer that 'Mayor of Port Maria Richard Creary stunned Government officials and other dignitaries attending the official opening of the Ian Fleming International Airport on January 12, when he told them that some St Mary residents felt slighted over the naming of the facility'.
Many in St Mary are clearly of the view that an airport in their midst —paid for by taxpayers' money — should be named for one of their own and that the Ian Fleming name sends a wrong message.
If we are to read between the lines, we have to conclude that disquiet and discontent over the approach to the naming of the airport are to be found in Government itself.
Note the "no comment" comment of member of Parliament for Western St Mary, Mr Robert Montague, who has junior ministerial responsibility for local government: "I have absolutely no comment on the matter... my mother always tell me that if you don't have anything good to say, don't say anything," he told the Sunday Observer.
This newspaper suspects that had the relevant Government personalities and agencies thought the issue through and recognised the need to consult with locals, they may well have had their way in naming the airport, given the obvious marketing logic.
As it is, the damage has been done and locals have a right to feel angry and slighted.
We have pointed out in this space previously, as indeed it has been repeatedly said elsewhere, that this Government has a major difficulty in terms of basic communication. It's a deficiency Mr Golding and his team need to urgently correct.
Meantime, what's to be done now that the airport has already been named? Perhaps a proper apology on the failure to consult, from all concerned, including the prime minister, will help.
