Caribbean Marketplace 2011 signals recovery - Caribbean [COLOR=blue! important][COLOR=blue! important]Hotel[/COLOR][/COLOR] and Tourism Association
Janet Silvera, Senior Gleaner Writer WESTERN BUREAU: The record number of registrations for Caribbean Marketplace 2011 is being touted as a signal that there is resurgence in the market.
With the exception of Jamaica, Cuba, Cancún, St Lucia, and the Dominican Republic, the rest of the region had taken a hit from the recession, many suffering a severe downturn in tourist arrivals in 2009.
However, "I was advised that we have exceeded our previous highest-buyer attendance, and that we are coming close to the highest number of registered sellers as well. It seems clear, therefore, that business is coming back," says Josef Fortsmayr, president of the Caribbean Hotel & [COLOR=blue! important][COLOR=blue! important]Tourism[/COLOR][/COLOR] Association (CHTA).
The CHTA and the Jamaica [COLOR=blue! important][COLOR=blue! important]Tourist [COLOR=blue! important]Board[/COLOR][/COLOR][/COLOR] (JTB) are joint partners of the event.
More than 1,300 delegates have already confirmed for the event which kicks off at the new multimillion-dollar Montego Bay Convention Centre today. It ends on Tuesday, January 18. The figure includes 850 [COLOR=blue! important][COLOR=blue! important]hotel[/COLOR][/COLOR] members and more than 600 supplier companies, including an Australian tour operator for the very first time.

A record number of regional ministers of tourism and directors of regional tourism/ and/or promotional boards are also attending the event, "Ten ministers of tourism will be here," Fortsmayr revealed, noting that this confirms the valiant efforts of the CHTA and the Caribbean Tourism Organization to work together even more closely.
The annual event, which is being held in Jamaica for the third time, has resulted in an upsurge in business in the tourism capital, with many hotels reporting very high to full occupancy either due to bookings by delegates registered for Marketplace, or from teams working on the set-up and execution of the event, says Wayne Cummings, president of the Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association.
He said the event had been causing a buzz in Montego Bay that is beyond positive. I believe very firmly that Jamaica and Montego Bay are added attractions for delegates to register.
Anticipating the level of business that will be 'written' for the upcoming contracted year, he said this expectation was high.
