Vice President of the National Workers’ Union, Granville Valentine, is suggesting that public sector workers in Jamaica take similar action as their counterparts in Trinidad and Tobago.
Hundreds of workers ignored warnings against strike action in the public service and staged a protest for higher wages in Port of Spain, Trinidad on Tuesday.
While Valentine is not suggesting public demonstrations, he believes Jamaican workers who have been denied wage increases agreed on with the government, should take strong action.
Valentine has taken issue with recent comments by State Minister in the Ministry of Finance and the Public Service, Senator Arthur Williams, that public sector workers are now more understanding of the fiscal problems facing the government.
He says members of the NWU have called the union expressing dissatisfaction about the comments suggesting they have eased their demands.
The Public Sector Monitoring Committee is currently deliberating on how the outstanding seven per cent increase due to public sector workers will be paid.
