    THE POLITICAL AGENDA: THOSE TO WATCH
    Published: Sunday | January 2, 2011

    People's National Party

    * Dr Peter Phillips …

    His acute understanding of the imperatives for transformation, broad societal reach necessary for consensus building, courageous disposition, impeccable integrity, and passion for service makes him ideally prepared to distinguish himself.

    He must rid himself of the fear of offending the leader of the party or being viewed as still seeking leadership. His rise will redound to Jamaica's benefit.

    * Dr Fenton Ferguson …

    A quiet, almost sleeping giant. Very sharp intellect, patient and well-schooled in the art of politics. Will shine in 2011.

    * Portia Simpson Miller …

    Appears to have lost her voice and becoming obsolete. Must rid herself of the circus of protectors who need her as their only source of relevance. Clearly the most widely accepted political leader in the country but can only re-emerge if she sheds what appears to be debilitating insecurity and embraces the sharp minds and quality that reside in the PNP.

    * Peter Bunting …

    Possesses the intellect and sharp strategic acumen but lacks the social understanding and willingness to reach across diverse groups for the linkages and commonality of purpose. Very courageous and tenacious. Will shine if he drops the dominant 'me' syndrome. Could be rendered ineffective by his counterpart in the JLP, as he lacks the natural field-marshal instinct.

    Jamaica Labour Party

    * Bruce Golding …

    Having spent the last three years squandering the confidence and hope reposed in him by the Jamaican people, he now has a glorious opportunity to come good. Given his propensity for procrastinating and his penchant for skirting the truth, it is unlikely for there to be much change. The fortunes of the JLP will rise with him but not sink, as the plank is awaiting him in the event of the latter scenario. A new type of leader has emerged during his brief tenure, which has not found favour with the populace. He must reposition quickly. Blessed with a sharp mind and the gift of oratory, he can recover and become the dominant figure in 2011.

    * Daryl Vaz …

    Having spent the last three years rewriting Horatio Algiers' rags-to-riches classic, he ingested a huge dose of self-importance. Lacking any real intellect and having a serious deficiency in social graces, he will sink to his natural level.

    * Aundre Franklyn …

    The stepchild of the JLP leadership cadre has a burning desire to prove that he belongs, and will use this opportunity afforded him to do so in a significant way. Widely accepted in the JLP as a rough and tough street politician, with often more courage than sense, he will emerge as the dominant field organiser in 2011. Will explode if not managed.

    * Mike Henry …

    The increasingly influential man of the JLP will use his ministerial power and access to contractors to fund the coffers of the JLP, thereby buying real power in 2011. A king in the making on the eve of general elections.

    * Dr Christopher Tufton …

    Building his political base and establishing commercial contacts. His propensity for hard work, coupled with a well-schooled and sharp mind, could stand him in good stead if Golding is shown the plank. Needs to rely less on non-verifiable statistics and more concrete evidence in the fields.

    * Desmond McKenzie …

    Will fight to the end knowing the prospect of a JLP loss at the next polls. Fading credibility will cause his political light to dim.

    * Andrew Holness …

    Wants to go to heaven without dying. If he develops the stomach and backbone, he will become a star in 2011.
