JCC chides Jamaican government on slow pace of downtown Kingston renewal
The Jamaica Chamber of Commerce (JCC) says it’s not happy with the pace at which government offices have been moving to downtown Kingston.
Early last year, Prime Minister Bruce Golding announced his administration’s intention to relocate several government offices as part of an initiative to redevelop the area.
However President of the JCC, Milton Samuda says despite the government’s mandate not many public sector companies or ministries have been making steps to relocate.
In the meantime, Samuda says several plans are being considered for the development of downtown Kingston.
The Cabinet has already approved a tax relief programme for businesses wishing to relocate downtown.
Telecommunications firm, Digicel is one company that has already started construction on its new headquarters in the commercial district.
Meanwhile, Industry and Commerce Minister Karl Samuda says his ministry will not be relocating to the Air Jamaica building in Downtown Kingston as was previously announced.
Karl Samuda says instead, the Accountant General’s department will be moved to that location.
The minister says while he’s willing to relocate if necessary, it would not be sensible at this time as the ministry of Industry and Commerce owns the building it now occupies.
