Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) in charge of Operations Glenmore Hinds says the police are being hampered in their efforts to dismantle gangs as a result of the absence of anti-gang legislation.
According to DCP Hinds most criminal activities now being committed in the island are being carried out by gangs.
But he said the law, as it now exists is not enough to prevent crimes committed by groups.
DCP Hinds said the anti-gang legislation when passed will provide significant support in dismantling the criminal groups.
DCP Hinds said several anti-gang strategies that have been implemented by the Jamaica Constabulary Force have been successful.
He said the police will be intensifying their efforts to get rid of gangs across the island.
Cabinet has so far approved changes to the proposed anti-gang legislation, which is expected to be before Parliament shortly.
Yesterday, the police raised their threat level to extremely high amid intelligence that criminals are planning to attack them.
The police reported threats from criminals in Spanish Town following the arrest of Tesha Miller, the reputed leader of the Spanish Town-based Clansman Gang.
The high command said police personnel had been coming under sustained gun attacks in Bedward Gardens, August Town from members of the gang led by Christopher ‘Dog Paw’ Linton.
