Miami, Florida:
Jamaica outpaced its Caribbean counterparts again Thursday night when the country was voted 'Best Caribbean Destination' at the annual Travel Weekly Readers' Choice Awards at the New York Plaza in Manhattan.
Displacing close competitors Aruba, Barbados, the Dominican Republic, St Lucia, and the US Virgin Islands, the island walked away with the coveted award for the second consecutive year.
It is the third major award for Jamaica in the last three months, having scooped an unparalleled number of honours at the World Travel Awards in October, and being named 'Best Honeymoon Destination' and 'Best Tourist Board' by the Canadian travel industry in November.
"It means that the destination and the JTB (Jamaica Tourist Board) are doing really well," the island's elated tourism director, John Lynch, told The Gleaner in an interview from New York yesterday.
This latest recognition is even more gratifying, owing to the fact that the United States travel trade - Jamaica's largest source market - validated the country as their top Caribbean destination by far, said the tourism director.
Readers of Travel Weekly, the leading US business-to-business travel industry publication reaching some 150,000 readers in the industry each week, were invited to nominate the most outstanding travel product and service in the past 12 months. Votes were cast over the summer in 59 categories through an open-ballot process. The leading vote recipients were identified as finalists, and voting on finalists took place this fall.
For John Lynch, "This award is testimony to our ongoing efforts to enhance the quality of Jamaica's tourism industry with continuous product development and expansion of our attraction offering."
Excited about the prospects this latest recognition brings, the tourism director said he and his team were looking forward to continuing to boost the country's appeal to travellers by offering the region's best and most comprehensive tourism product.
It is a known fact that Jamaica's variety of accomodation, along with its more than 150 attractions, continue to broaden the island's appeal. This, combined with convenient non-stop airlift makes Jamaica easily accessible from a number of major markets across the US.
Commenting on the awards, Travel Weekly's editor-in-chief, Arnie Weissmann, in a press release stated: "These awards identify the industry's finest. The professionals who read and rely on Travel Weekly have the expertise to select those businesses, destinations, and hotels that provide a higher level of service to their clients. Our readers can be confident that these winners represent the best this industry has to offer."
