JLP fears loss at local government elections- analysts

At least two social commentators believe the governing Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) may be delaying the local government elections because it fears a loss at the polls and not for the stated reasons.
The government has said that the postponement will allow more time to complete the local government reform process and the establishment of Portmore as the 15th parish.
But commentators, Martin Henry and Kevin O’Brien Chang, believe the government is not confident enough at this time to face voters in an election that could be a referendum on its performance.
Both men have called for local government to become entrenched with a set schedule for the holding of elections.
According to Henry, local government continues to be like "Cinderella" in the structure of government, whereby successive governments have shown a lack of commitment to local government reform.
