Analysts call JLP internal elections a wake up call

At least one Political Observer says the results of Sunday's internal elections should serve as a wake up call for Jamaica Labour Party Leader Bruce Golding.

Publisher of the Western Mirror newspaper, Lloyd B. Smith, says the surprise defeat of Daryl Vaz, who is one of Prime Minister Golding's strong allies in the Party, is a sign that it cannot be business as usual.

Mr. Smith says there are clear indications that efforts by Mr. Golding to solidify his leadership of the Party might not be going according to plan.

“The combination of a Mike Henry and an Aundre Franklin does not auger well for Mr. Golding should he continue on the same path he has been on. It’s a wake up call for him to realize that the party does not necessarily want to go totally in the direction that he wants to go,” Mr. Smith said.

And Political Analyst, Shalman Scott, says all eyes will be on the JLP to see if it will remain united following the internal elections.

“This is no ordinary victory for Franklin nor ordinary defeat for Daryl Vaz. The democratic process within the JLP is demonstrably alive and what remains now is how the post internal elections impact on future relationships among key players in the Jamaica Labour Party,”

“The nation will be watching to see if the various contestants winners and losers, how they relate to one another from now on,” Mr. Scott said.
