  • Jamaica turns down Air Turks and Caicos

The Government has been blasted by a regional air carrier for the decision not to accept its application to expand service to Jamaica.
According to an internet report, Air Turks and Caicos CEO Lyndon Gardiner is livid that the Golding administration stalled his airline's plan to operate flights to the island.
In June, Air Turks and Caicos applied for an operating licence to take over routes from Air Jamaica Express.
Those plans came to a halt this week when the application to operate three brand new services was turned down by the Jamaica Air Services Licensing Board following objections from rival airline, Jamaica Air Shuttle.
Mr. Gardiner had plans to use the Kingston hub to take advantage of connections to major European and Russian markets.
The new routes would have taken the airline in and out of Kingston to Port-au-Prince, Havana and Santo Domingo.
Mr. Gardiner believes the decision is a blow for Jamaica, TCI and Air Turks and Caicos.
The airline had also applied for permission to fly between Kingston and Havana, however, Jamaica Air Shuttle reportedly complained that it should be the airline to operate the routes.
"Jamaica's future reflects its past, having attained only one per cent annual growth over 30 years whilst neighbours have grown at five per cent." (Article)
