The programme, dubbed 'Christmas in the City ... Downtown Comes Alive', will be held December 15 in an effort to get more people to shop in the area over the holiday season.
Last year, the event turned out to be a major success as thousands of people swarmed the streets of the city to take advantage of the huge discounts offered by businesses throughout the area.
Kingston Mayor Desmond McKenzie said the event, which will see stores and vendors from Church Street to Darling Street participating from 10 a.m to 10 p.m., has been repeated because of demands from vendors and the shopping public.
"We have a much greater participation of vendors this year than we had last year," he said.
"It gives the vendors, not only those in the stores, an opportunity to make some money, and I think it is something good for the area as it is part of the whole revitalisation of the whole selling of downtown Kingston," McKenzie said.
The mayor said Jamaicans should not be fearful when shopping because "last year, it was incident free, and we are expecting the same this year".
McKenzie added that like last year, shoppers will be able to benefit from a range of discounts in the commercial shopping area.
Entertainment package
He encouraged persons to make every effort to be part of the event as in addition to the wide range of discounts, there would be an entertainment package with a number of artistes performing.
Second vice-president of the Jamaica Chamber of Commerce, Francis Kennedy, expressed similar sentiments, saying that the event is a way to boost shopping going on downtown.
"Shopping downtown is usually last-minute, and that is why it is held 10 days before Christmas so that people will come and shop early," he noted.
He said people could expect to get between 15 to 50 per cent off items.
The Gleaner Company and Wisynco are two of the sponsors for the event.
