Vaz denies he owes millions in taxes

    Sunday, November 28, 2010

DARYL Vaz yesterday denied an allegation that he owes hundreds of millions of dollars in taxes and suggested that a rumour that he did has political undertones.

Vaz, in a statement, said that it was certainly not coincidental that this allegation started upon the announcement of his intention to contest for the general secretary post of the ruling Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) “and is being published within days of the JLP Central Executive meeting” at which an election for party posts will be held.

Vaz said that since announcing his intention to run for JLP general secretary he has been formally and informally communicated with by several individuals and media houses on this allegation and has responded accordingly.

“None of these media houses thought it necessary to print or air any story on this matter as there is clearly nothing untoward to report on,” he said. “It is, however, no surprise that a local weekly with a blatant political bias has once again sought to sully my name with a most ridiculous, sensational and malicious story without seeking a response or clarification from me.”

Vaz, who is also the information minister, did not name the weekly of which
he spoke, but called on the Press Association of Jamaica, particularly in light of its celebration of National Journalism Week, “to not allow politically driven media interests to continually dishonour the name of Jamaica’s hard-working and responsible community of journalists”.

He said that as at November 2010, based on a current agreement with the Tax Department, neither he, nor any company that he is involved with, has any outstanding matter with the Tax Department.

He said that he has interest in a company that was recently audited by the Tax Department. “The audited period was for the years 2005 to 2008 and the assessment was received in late 2009. The matter was dealt with through the objection process and an agreement and payment terms were finalised between the Tax Department and the company’s auditors, which the company directors will adhere to,” he said.

“The terms of the agreement are standard, and as such similar to those other companies enjoy. This is standard for thousands of other companies in Jamaica and is therefore no way outside the norm,” Vaz added.

He said that the matter was dealt with at the Tax Audit and Assessment Department and “at no time” did he seek to appeal to the Ministry of Finance or the minister for any write-off or waivers, which is an avenue open to and often used by companies faced with similar issues.

But I could have sworn that on the news itself that he acknowledged that there were outstanding taxes...actually here it is from the RJR website:

      Vaz denies "sweetheart" deal allegations

      Daryl Vaz, Information Minister.

Information Minister Daryl Vaz has denied allegations that he has received a "sweetheart" deal from tax authorities.

Mr. Vaz was responding to allegations in a Sunday Herald newspaper report that he owes millions of dollars in taxes but has negotiated a generous agreement with the Tax Administration Services Department.

While acknowledging that he does have an arrangement to pay outstanding taxes owed by Ultimate Exotics Limited, a company for which he is a Director, Mr. Vaz insists he has not received any special treatment from the State.

"I do have an agreement with the Tax Department, like thousands of other companies, for which I'm adhering to, and therefore, the Sunday Herald article is totally erroneous in terms of any write offs or any waivers. I did not seek anything, it was all handled through the objection process and it was totally above board … no favours were done," declared Mr. Vaz.

He added that the company was audited for the 2005 to 2008 period and the assessment was received in late 2009.

According to Mr. Vaz, the company has since met all the strictures laid down by the tax department.

He noted that the companies which have their assets seized are those which fail to meet their agreed obligations after an assessment is done.

Mr. Vaz, who is also a candidate for the post of General Secretary in the Jamaica Labour Party, says he does not believe it is a coincidence that this allegation has been made public just days before the party's internal elections.

        So which is it?

"While acknowledging that he does have an arrangement to pay outstanding taxes owed by Ultimate Exotics Limited, a company for which he is a Director..."

        doesn't seem to agree with

"He said that as at November 2010, based on a current agreement with the Tax Department, neither he, nor any company that he is involved with, has any outstanding matter with the Tax Department."

It's either he has to pay outstanding taxes for a company he directs or he doesn't. It can't be halfway.

What an idiot! Just because you have an arrangement to pay it back doesn't mean it's not owing! FOOL!

Vaz.
And it's high time Vaz gets off this silly train where he believes that just because others are in the same boat, that means everything is alright. Note his constant yapping about who has moral authority to say what. JACKASS!

Mr. Vaz, who is also a candidate for the post of General Secretary in the Jamaica Labour Party, says he does not believe it is a coincidence that this allegation has been made public just days before the party's internal elections.
Talk about coincidence! Was it coincidence that the Trafigura incident resurfaced at the time of the JLP conference. A-HOLE!!!

He is being technical - the matter is not outstanding because he has made arrangements with them, the Tax Dept. The problem is, those arrangements are for OUTSTANDING TAXES!!! Who care about the matter?!?
