JLP donations dwarf funds collected by PNP

DONORS appeared to have favoured the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) over the People's National Party (PNP) in the past political year.
Christopher Bovell, treasurer of the JLP, in reporting to the party's 67th annual conference on Sunday, said donors gave the party $52.4 million in 2009.
Earlier this year, the PNP, in making public its audited report, said the party received a shade more than $20 million in donations.
Neither party has revealed the sources of the political contributions, nor have they said how these monies were spent.
"That I won't go into the details about, but you know what they are. Salaries, wages, legal fees, utilities, public relations and, of course, last year's conference is included in that figure," Bovell told the fired-up Labourites.
He said the party received $57.7 million in income and spent $56.6 million of that amount. Those financials, however, have not yet been audited.
Meanwhile, Bovell said the accounts of the JLP for the 2009 financial year would be made public. The move will follow that of the PNP which, in September, became the first political party to release its financials to the public.
"I am pleased to report that we have completed our audited report for the year ending 31 October 2009. We will present these to the Central Executive when it meets on Sunday, December 5, and then to the public," Bovell said.
