THE Independent Commission of Investigation has laid its first charge against an agent of the state.
Constable Delroy Shaw, of the Traffic Headquarters at Elleston Road in East Kingston, is the first member of the security forces to be formally charged by the commission.
Shaw was charged today following a ruling by the Director of Public Prosecutions Paula Llewellyn.
The constable was charged with assault occasioning bodily harm and will appear in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court on November 30.
The assault allegedly occurred on May 26, 2009 during a domestic dispute in which the complainant said shaw battered him with a piece of board causing trauma and bruises.
The investigation into this complaint of abuse by a member of the security forces is one of more than 250 that INDECOM took over when it began operations three months ago.
INDECOM was established to investigate actions by members of the Security Forces and other agents of the State that result in death, injury or the abuse of rights. The body currently has 12 investigators.
INDECOM is still recruiting and training staff.
