$6.5-billion St Bess, St Ann housing project

    3,500 homes to be completed

THE Ministry of Water and Housing says that is close to unveiling what it is billing as the largest government housing project since the Greater Portmore Development of the 1990’s.

Housing minister Horace Chang said in a statement today that the $6.5-billion project will begin by the end of the year and will see the completion of some 3,500 homes in St Elizabeth and St Ann.

Intended to provide affordable housing, the project is being funded by a US$71.2m loan from China Ex-Im Bank and will be managed by Housing Agency of Jamaica Limited (HAJ). More than homes are to be completed in Runaway Bay, St Ann and Luana in St Elzabeth.

“We have plans for the construction of over 2000 new houses and serviced lots. The scope of work also includes the upgrading of a large informal settlement and the completion of two old Operation Pride Schemes," said Chang.

The construction project was awarded to the China National Complete Plant Import and Export Corporation earlier this year. Construction on the multi-million dollar project is expected to commence within weeks of the groundbreaking in December.
