Why the brouhaha over Tivoli graffiti?

    Friday, November 12, 2010

    Dear Editor,
I saw an article in the Observer of November 10, "Green with rage!", which is creating a scene in certain parts of Jamaica. Why are so many people getting upset about it?

Do the people of Tivoli, the PM, the mayor and my dear friend, former schoolmate and head of the Tivoli Gardens police post, Renford Rowe, know what the meaning of graffiti is? Let me assume that they don't know or let me be bolder and drop the word "assume" and say they don't have a clue what graffiti means.

If they did know, then the police, the PM and the mayor would be investigating in every single part of Jamaica every day. Graffiti are words or pictures that are written or drawn in public places, for example, on walls or posters. Now, let's reason and find out why so many people are huffing and puffing.

What are they investigating? Are they investigating the criminal act of painting private or government properties without permission, or are they investigating the so-called disrespect shown to the people of Tivoli and the PM? Would the people of Tivoli, the PM and the police cry foul if "We love Dudus like cooked food" was written on the walls in Tivoli? What would they do if "No PNP supporters can't live in Tivoli" was written on the walls? Would they rejoice or cry foul?

I want to think they would rejoice and even "lick" shots. This kind of thinking is dragging down Jamaica further in the mud. We cannot think like this and expect the country to move forward. This is worse than Third-World thinking. It is not possible to move forward when some people are thinking from other parts of their bodies instead of their brains.

Isn't it time the politicians educate our people so that they can think wisely, reasonably and justly? When you read such news, one has to really wonder if our people are that brain-dead. In documentaries, movies or commercials about Jamaica, you see graffiti littering almost every single wall in Jamaica and we never once see the PM from either party investigating the graffiti issue until now. Is the PM trying to redeem himself after the Dudus brawl?

Graffiti must be condemned everywhere in Jamaica. The half-baked approach in everything in Jamaica is something we must address. I saw the following headline in another paper: "Jamaica needs a single vision" (with a single mission). Do I need to explain what it means?

Well said. The lady in the picture symbolizes all that is wrong about Jamaica. We might as well be living in some backward francophone central African country, sorry entity.
