Four parish councils take care of their own finances

Robert Montague, State Minister with responsibility for Local Government.

As of April 2011, four parish councils will begin to receive their monthly subventions directly from the Ministry of Finance instead of the Department of Local Government.
This was revealed by Bobby Montague, State Minister with responsibility for Local Government at the ground breaking ceremony for a new parish council meeting chamber in St. Elizabeth on Wednesday.
Mr. Montague said the Councils of Manchester, St. James, Trelawny and St. Thomas, will be removed from the books of the Local Government Department because of their financial maturity.
"This is because of their level of community involvement – in terms of their parish development plans, working with the Parish Development Committees and civil society – the amount of funds they bring forward in own-source revenue and overall management and direction," he said.
Mr. Montague said two more councils may be added to the list of those which the Department Local Government will remove from its books in 2011.
