    US midterm elections 2010: Campaign spending set to reach £2.5 billion

    The total amount of money spent on the midterm election campaign is on course to reach $4 billion (£2.5 billion), researchers estimate, exceeding the previous record by a third.

                In Florida, the Republican candidate for governor has spent more than $50 million of his own money on his campaign, not to mention what he got from donors. That has allowed him to stay in contention even though he is a criminal guility of insurance fraud and should rightly be in prison.

                In California, the Republican candidate for governor has spent more than 100 million of her own money , and still seems set to lose the race.
