The Cornwall Regional Hospital in St James is to be renamed in honour of the late Dr. Herbert Eldemire.
The minister with responsibility for information, Daryl Vaz made the announcement during this morning’s post cabinet press briefing.
Dr. Eldemire who died in May this year served as a minister of health from 1962 to 1972.
He was also responsible for, among other things, the establishment of the Cornwall Regional Hospital, the School of Nursing and the introduction of the National Family Planning Programme.
Dr. Eldemire was also a Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) chairman from 1967-1972 and maintained a large private practice in Montego Bay
for more than 40 years.
