  • Gov't criticised for being too dependent on lending agency

    RJR

A representative of the European Union has challenged the Jamaican Government to become more pro-active in the handling of natural disasters.
The challenge was issued by Dr. Badrul Haque, Special Representative to Jamaica for the International Bank for Reconstruction, while he was speaking at the official handing over of a grant of J$2.38 million towards the Post-Gustav Recovery effort.
In handing over the funds, Dr. Haque criticised the Government of Jamaica for becoming too dependent on donor agencies.
"Currently, Jamaica is relying about 100% on donor resources to address disaster risks and it remains largely reactive as opposed to proactive when it comes to addressing its hazard risk. In light of more severe weather events and the related dislocation and damage, it is important not only to build back and to build back better but also to prepare better for these events," he said.
"Jamaica's future reflects its past, having attained only one per cent annual growth over 30 years whilst neighbours have grown at five per cent." (Article)

also them paying inna caribbean Insurance scheme that they never seems to can draw down no matter what the disaster. There is always some clause which make it not possible.
        • Don't let negative things break you, instead let it be your strength, your reason for growth. Life is for living and I won't spend my life feeling cheated and downtrodden.
