I hope you trying to be funny. Check the murder rate in Chicago, New York or Boston all cities with as cold or colder weather than Toronto. The difference has to do with the Canadian mindset and also the different rules in Canada with regard to gun ownership, possession and access.

it is worthy to acknowledge gains made by law enforcement evidenced by the downward trend in murders and other crimes... however, i agree that even 80 murders is way too much... vigiliance must be maintained by law enforcement to further reduce murders and the wider society must also be employed in the effort...

i think rudi mentioned boston... here in boston, the authorities are going crazy with our murder rate... a quadruple murder couple weeks ago brought the total up to about 49... metro boston has approx 4.5 mil people... the city has little over half million...

check out this link below... various years murder statistics listed by date, name, location, weapon used... i think jamaica should have a similar statistic page like this... it makes it all so real...

I am somewhat disapointed by the responses to this thread.

One would think that the original article had suggested that 1000 murders a year was acceptable. Nobody in thier right mind would think that.

What is worth noting is the TREND. Not too long ago, the trend was that it was getting WORSE, now the trend is that it is getting BETTER not by a statistically insignificant amount like 2 murders per year, but by a quite significant amount.

SURELY this is something worth noting? Clearly if the TREND continues there will come a point where our murder rate is no longer horrendous but just too high. Isn't that how progess works? Do we really expect anybody, anywhere to come up with a way to reduce the murder rate from 1500+ to less than 100 in less than 5 years?

And since NY city is the poster child for crime reduction, lets look at a chart showing how long it took to reduce thier murder rate.

Did it happen in 2 years?

The trend is certainly remarkable! And needs to continue!

understood not discounting the efforts but when you say 80 a month and somewhere else has 80 a year you do need to look at it.

but yuh have to start from somewhere to get to 80 a year. it's not going to go from 130 a month to 7 a month braps suh, so the trend is to be acknowledged and congratulated.

We pass that point long time on looking at how we view our monthly numbers versus places viewing their annual numbers.

I don't think anyone in Jamaica is satisfied with the number being where it is now, what people like is that it is going in the direction it needs to go in for us to one day get to the stage where Jamaicans can react similarly to people in Toronto when murders reach 100 for the year. I think every one, from regular man to politician to even gunman, know that we have a long way to go.

People seriously expecting Jamaica's murder rate to go from over 1600 to under 100 overnight? LOL
It's going to take YEARS to reach that level and that's if this downward trend is sustained.
The good news is that it is moving in the right direction, it will be a long hard journey back to something similar to civilised!

who in their right mind would have that expectation... with a sustained effort by law enforcement and cooperation by the people the downward trend can continue...

coming from where we were, we are making steady progress... it needs to be celebrated... as a nation, we cannot be complacent and think that 80 murders per month is satisfactory... the pressure still needs to be on law enforcement AND the government to have a continuation of this downward trend...

TG was significant yes, BUT we already have tons of guns in Jamaica from decades on importation. The assembly line can get disrupted for a year with significant consequences. We flooded with gun.

How yuh think the murder rate drop so fast? Yuh think all of a sudden we short of illicit guns? Nah man, is the brazenness that is suddenly in short supply. Balance of fear has shifted.

In any case, you keep avoiding the elephant in the room. The internecine gang killings? What, PNP gunmen (except for possibly Matches Lane) took refuge in Tivoli too?
