Juveniles accused of setting fire to homeless man
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Three juveniles implicated in the grisly murder of 54-year-old Lionel Maitland — a homeless man who was set ablaze late last month — were remanded in custody when they appeared before the Montego Bay Family Court last week.
The three — all of St James addresses — plus two others who were charged but are being held at a children’s home in Manchester, are scheduled to reappear in court with their parents Wednesday.
One of the children — a 13-year-old — is charged with murder while the others — between eight and 12 — are charged as uncontrollable juveniles.
All but one of the parents who were charged with child neglect, were also remanded.
One parent — the mother of a two-year-old child — was offered bail to the sum of $10,000.
Police reports are that Maitland was asleep on the pavement of the Super Plus Supermarket along Barnett Street on September 11, when he was set ablaze by the juveniles.
He was taken to the Cornwall Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
A subsequent post mortem revealed that he died as a result of severe burns.
