Woman Gets Probation For Shooting At Police

A woman who pleaded guilty in July to robbing a gas station and shooting at the police has been placed on probation for three years.
The woman is 23-year-old Tracy Ann Miller, also called Terry Ann Brown, of Rema, south St Andrew.
Supreme Court Judge Marjorie Cole-Smith gave Brown a non-custodial sentence after defence lawyer Christopher Townsend made a special plea for leniency.
Shortly after the robbery, Miller was shot and injured during a shoot-out with the police.
Townsend said one of Miller's kidneys was damaged during the shoot-out. He said Miller had a seven-year-old disabled child who was now in hospital and she had sole responsibility for the child.
Miller had pleaded guilty to charges of illegal possession of firearm, robbery with aggravation, and shooting with intent.
Miller's trial began on July 8 in the Gun Court, but the next day she entered a guilty plea. The court was told that about 2:45 a.m. on February 7, 2008, Miller and her boyfriend held up a gas station in Harbour View, St Andrew, and robbed it at gun-point of 400 phonecards and some snacks. They escaped in a motor car.
The police, who were alerted, gave chase when they spotted the car, but came under gunfire from the occupants. The chase ended in Rema, where the couple jumped out of the car and escaped.
Several hours later, Miller turned up at the Kingston Public Hospital with a gunshot injury to her back.
She was held by the police, and when questioned, gave a false name and address.
Following investigations by the cops, she was arrested and charged.
Her accomplice is still at large.
