The People’s National Party (PNP) president, Portia Simpson-Miller, has indicated that the party would press ahead with its programme of constitutional reform if it becomes the next government in Jamaica.
A general election is constitutionally due by 2012.
Addressing the PNP’s 72nd annual conference yesterday, Simpson-Miller said the first priority would be the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
She also said a PNP government would make the necessary steps to replace the United Kingdom-based Privy Council, with the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) as Jamaica’s final appellate court.
Jamaica has only signed on to the original jurisdiction of the CCJ to interpret and resolve trade treaty disputes.
The PNP president said the party would move forward with enacting legislation for the impeachment of certain public officials.
Simpson-Miller also said her party intends to establish a National Council on Justice to drive the reform of justice system.
She said the Council would serve to ease the burden being faced by the justice ministry, as it would take on areas of the system that can be tackled without the need for vast resources.
