The embattled Member of Parliament for North-East St. Ann has sought to explain her part in the latest dual citizenship conundrum.

In a release, Shahine Robinson claimed that she had taken steps from as far back as June 2007 to renounce her United States (US) citizenship and therefore thought the process was complete when she was nominated.

According to Mrs. Robinson, she became an American citizen by naturalisation in 2006.

She said in June 2007, prior to Nomination Day which was on August 7, 2007, she attended the Immigration and Naturalization Services Office in Miami, Florida and handed in her US passport with the intention to renounce her US citizenship.

She asserted that at the time, she was led to believe that this was a sufficient act to renounce her citizenship so that on Nomination Day, she was of the view she was no longer an American citizen.

    Not enough

Mrs. Robinson said, in keeping with that view, she applied to the US embassy in Jamaica for a US visitor's visa, which was refused.

She claims it is in this context that when she was asked whether she was a US citizen at the time of nomination she indicated that she was not.

............. WHY - BECAUSE HER VISITOR'S VISA WAS REFUSED?..............

Mrs. Robinson contends that when the application was made by her to set aside the Judgment which declared her seat vacant, she was in possession of a preliminary opinion from a US attorney-at-law confirming that the acts she carried out amounted to renunciation.

However, she adds that she has since been advised that those actions were not enough.

She also confirmed that she will not be contesting the petition when it comes up for hearing on October 4.

She will then take steps to go through all the formalities required by US law which will result in the renunciation of her American citizenship.

According to Mrs. Robinson, her action was neither deliberate nor intentional.

She also apologized to the people of Jamaica and in particular her constituents. 6 hours ago ยท Report
