Committee to decide on Brady's future in JLP
Friday, September 17, 2010
HAROLD Brady's continued membership with the ruling Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) is to be decided by a special committee named by the Standing Committee following an emergency meeting at the JLP's Belmont Road headquarters in Kingston Wednesday night.
Brady, an attorney at law, has blamed for the Manatt, Phelps & Phillips controversy that has been strangling the ruling JLP for the past six months.
"The mandate of the committee is to review the status of Mr Brady's membership and to consider whether his actions in the handling of the Manatt issue require his referral to the Disciplinary Committee of the party," the party said in a release.
Prime Minister Bruce Golding told journalists at a press briefing at Jamaica House Tuesday that Brady was no longer a member of the party.
Brady, however, shot back, saying that he was not only a member of the JLP, but also a member of the Central Executive — the highest decision-making body outside of the party's annual conference.
The JLP, in its press statement, said the Standing Committee was advised by the general secretary Karl Samuda that Brady was not a member in good standing up to the time of the prime minister's statement, as his dues had not been paid for three years and his failure to regularly attend Central Executive meetings, led to him being ineligible to attend official party meetings.
"This matter, having become a controversial issue, has been referred to a special committee of the party for consideration and report to the Standing Committee at its next meeting," said the JLP.
On the issue of Brady's membership on statutory boards, the party said the Standing Committee was advised that at the time of the prime minister's instruction that the attorney be removed from all statutory boards, he was only a member of the Jamaica Railway Corporation (JRC).
"The Standing Committee was further advised by [Transport Minister] Mike Henry, under whose portfolio the JRC falls, that he was indeed sent a letter by the PM requiring him to revoke the appointment of Mr Brady as a member of the JRC Board but had not done so in anticipation of the resignation of Mr Brady on other grounds. That resignation was in fact submitted by Mr Brady, according to the JLP's press release.
The prime minister alleged Tuesday that Brady misled Manatt — a US law firm — into believing that he was retaining its services on behalf of the Jamaican Government instead of the JLP, to lobby US authorities in the extradition case of Christopher 'Dudus' Coke, who the Americans have accused of trafficking in drugs and arm
