UPDATE: Dialogue continues to avert national strike in Jamaica

The Jamaica Confederation of Trade Unions (JCTU) is to hold further dialogue with the Government, to avert an islandwide strike by public sector workers.
Civil servants are restive over the Government’s failure to pay outstanding allowances and salaries due since 2008.
The [COLOR=blue ! important][COLOR=blue ! important]finance [COLOR=blue ! important]ministry[/COLOR][/COLOR][/COLOR]
has said the national strike was called off following initial talks with the JCTU.
According to the JCTU general secretary, Wayne Jones, further talks will be held this week with technical teams from the finance ministry.
Jones says the public sector monitoring committee will also meet next week to consider the remuneration options for public sector workers.
President of the University and Allied Workers Union, Lambert Brown, says there could be a national strike if the meetings fail.
The Government has maintained that it cannot pay the salary increases due to public sector workers, because of the conditions of the agreement with the [COLOR=blue ! important][COLOR=blue ! important]International [COLOR=blue ! important]Monetary [/COLOR][COLOR=blue ! important]Fund[/COLOR][/COLOR][/COLOR]
