    Airlift handlers on strike

    Vincent Morrison, NWU President.

There is more trouble on the industrial relations scene as scores of airlift handlers who are attached to the country's two international airports are on strike.

The employees, who are represented by the National Workers Union (NWU) walked off the job Wednesday evening to protest against the breakdown in wage negotiations with the management of Airlift Handlers Limited.

The strike has implications for the processing of baggage and cargo at the Norman Manley and Sangster International Airports.

According to the NWU, airlift handlers have not received a salary increase in three years.

Airlines refuse to assit the workers - Morrison
Vincent Morrison, President, says despite the intervention of the Ministry of Labour, the parties have not been able to hammer out a new wage and fringe benefits agreement for the workers.

“We have been negotiating with the company for three years and the company has flatly refused to assist the employees. We have put a number of reasonable proposals to the company and we’ve had two or three meetings at the Ministry of Labour,” he said.

According to Mr. Morrison, the union fully supports the workers decision to take industrial action.

Airlift handlers are contracted by Air Jamaica and other airlines to provide several services including loading and unloading aircraft as well as handling cargo.
Life is a system of half-truths and lies, opportunistic, convenient evasion.”
