The Opposition People’s National Party (PNP) is challenging the Government to prove to the country that it was the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) that contracted the US law firm Manatt, Phelps and Phillips.
The challenge was issued at a press briefing a short while ago.
Opposition leader Portia Simpson Miller argued that rather than challenging people to prove that it had contracted the law firm, the government should instead prove that it did not.
The Government had been insisting that it was the JLP which contracted the US law firm Manatt, Phelps & Phillips in the ‘Dudus’ extradition matter and not the administration.
However, email contacts revealed in a Sunday Gleaner expose´ indicate that Manatt had an arrangement with the Government of Jamaica.
Since then, the Opposition PNP has been calling for the Prime Minister, the attorney general, Dorothy Lightbourne, and the solicitor general Douglas Leys to resign over the Manatt muddle.
During yesterday’s post cabinet press briefing, Daryl Vaz, the minister with responsibility for information maintained that the email correspondences were nothing new.
He also addressed concerns about an excerpt from an email from local attorney Harold Brady to Manatt.
In the email, Brady said he would first need to brief the Prime Minister and the Attorney General on an issue before make a decision with Manatt.
According to Vaz this is no proof that the Prime Minister was in fact briefed.
However, questioned specifically as to whether the Prime Minister was briefed, Vaz said he did not know.
